    WHAT IS PIR?

Both PIR and PUR belong to the general PU (polyurethane) category. PU is a plastic material created through a chemical reaction between polyols and isocyanates and exists in many forms. Depending on its application, it can be highly flexible or, conversely, very rigid.
PIR – polyisocyanurate – and PUR – polyurethane – are made from the same raw materials. The difference lies in the proportions used in the production process, which gives PIR slightly stronger physicochemical bonds. Thanks to its superior fire resistance and thermal insulation properties, PIR is considered an improved version of PUR. That’s why modern insulation boards are made with PIR.

PIR polyurethane insulation is currently the best and most efficient solution for thermal insulation and energy retrofitting of roofs, floors, and façades.
UNILIN Utherm PIR boards, available in Wall, Roof, and Floor versions, offer a lambda value of λ: 0.022 W/mK, which is 50% better than EPS (expanded polystyrene), XPS (extruded polystyrene), mineral wool, or cellulose.
Available with a variety of facings, these boards allow for the insulation of every part of a building – from floors and foundations to walls and the roof.

    PIR Delivers Long-Term Performance

PIR retains its shape and insulation properties over time, providing a one-time, long-lasting solution to insulation challenges. Moreover, Unilin is committed to making polyurethane recyclable by 2030, enabling the production of new, equivalent insulation boards from recycled materials.

PIR Means Thin Yet Effective Insulation

PIR offers highly efficient thermal performance using only a thin insulation layer, saving both space and resources. Unilin Utherm PIR boards provide a lambda value of λ: 0.022 W/mK, which is 50% better than polystyrene (EPS), mineral wool, or cellulose (average λ: 0.036 W/mK).
This means you can achieve the same insulation performance with significantly thinner boards. Thanks to their low weight, these insulation boards are easy to handle and cost-effective to transport. Additionally, building insulation with PIR does not require heavy structural support. In other words, fewer materials mean more sustainable construction.

    PIR Is Strong and Durable

PIR owes its durability to its high-density closed-cell structure. This makes it moisture-resistant, walkable, and highly pressure-resistant—ideal for use in roofs, floors, and walls. PIR is used in many applications, both flexible and rigid. Just think of the soft filling in cushions, sofas, armrests, and mattresses—PIR is everywhere, from comfort to construction.
